The article “Gaming: Essays on Algorithmic Culture” helped
in my mind break down the overall concept of video games into a couple simple
lines. From the reading I learned the different terms for each interaction and
feedback from the game or device. The two terms used were operator actions and
machine actions, the machine actions automatically sounded like the term
feedback I use in my science of design course all the time. Feedback is some
time of sign or signal the device gives back to the user to help with the
“performance” of the user. Feedback from almost any object always helps the
user with its functionality and this article explained it’s just as important
when used in a videogame.
The next topic covered that interested me was the breakdown
of diegetic and nondiegetic. Diegetic acts the author explained as something
like a slow motion gunfight in a game or something with more a film aspect.
Whereas the nondiegetic things reminded of icons or HUD’s in games like call of
duty or gran theft auto. In the two games there’s always different maps or
health bars to basically give feedback to the player, so in what ever game
there playing they can be as “successful” as possible.
