Niel Stepehenson is one of those writers that you latch on
as soon as you catch onto his style of writing. It makes you pay attention
because it’s so animated and vivid and that’s why it made this reading so
interesting. The comparison and all the analyzing between computer interfaces,
as well as comparing them to MGB’s, Tanks, and Batmobiles. These are all things
you know enough about compare to so you’re on a constant watch for what, and
why. Urging to find out who wins, what does he lean toward using, and why;
questioning what you know as a reader. Making the reader understand what you
are talking about early on and clear is what kept me on my toes the whole time
wanting to know what can I learn more, or what do I know that can be simplified
by this reading.
The explanation what the “internet”, or the World Wide Web is
about was the most magnificent thing. The use of what Ronald Reagan did as an
announcer, creating that image in someone’s head made everything so clear if
you needed a concrete explanation of what is it that we see happening in front
of us there it is. I love how he’s against what common society says about the
most common interfaces being used, stripping them into only a skeleton and then
building the skeleton up with his views trying to make you realize that there
is a difference between these things.
Another is the history goes back to a
long time ago to programs like beOS which I haven’t heard about since I was in
middle school because its not mainstream like OS, Windows, and Linux. Something
that opened my eyes was the fact that everything he saying was actually true
like the Disney comparison to GUI being something beautiful but expensive
reminded me of OS software that is expensive but it looks amazing, where as its
commonly preferred over Linux, and Windows.
